Peanut Snow 2014 January1535423_10202246030024980_512582690_n

We had our first snow here on January 22, 2014 and are expecting more snowfall on Tuesday.  We get all excited around here, since we don’t get it too often and we aren’t all that used to seeing the white stuff.  It is almost time to make the Snow Cream!! We were taught that the 2nd snowfall is the one to make the Snow Cream with, since the first one washes the impurities out of the sky, or at least that is the way we were taught.

My mother passed this exciting recipe to me as a child as I passed it along to my own children when they were little by participation in making it.

What do you do with the 2nd snow fall? Make Snow Cream!   It’s fast and fun and easy and was a family tradition in our house.

Hands-On Time: 10 minutes
Ready In: 10 minutes
Yield: Serves Excited children!!

Ingredients

1 cup half and half or milk
1/3  cup granulated sugar (adjust to your taste)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 to 6 cups clean, freshly fallen snow

Directions

  1. In a large bowl combine half and half or milk, vanilla extract and sugar. Stir until sugar is dissolved, about 3 minutes.
  2. Stir in snow, a cup at a time, until the snow cream magically forms! Freeze for several minutes if desired before serving.

The snow brought back memories of when my children were young, and they collected the snow so carefully with me to make sure it was fresh white clean snow to put in the steel bowl. They were so excited to participate in this family ritual, usually with the second snow of the year. It is something I hope that my grown children pass down to their own children.

It is called tradition, and nowadays, sometimes we have to remember these type of things and follow through with them as my dad would say.  Especially in this day and age of computers, and technology when some don’t talk face to face or even via telephone or cell phone, or are too busy to realize what and who are important as tradition and simple pleasures.

I recall being outside with my own children and the excitement in their eyes of the first snow, I would get myself and them bundled all up to go out and attempt to make a snowman and we even got creative with a large cookie sheet to slide down a road in our neighborhood.  I get nostalgic when I see the first snow and my memories start to flow.

My son was the youngest and was hilarious, he was the comedian, he was so bundled up he would fall back in the snow, we would have to pick him up when he was a young child and he would keep doing it.  He would laugh, along with me and his sister at how he couldn’t get up, and of course my daughter would start the snow angel first, then her brother would follow in making his, then we would have a snowball fly out of nowhere and the fun began again, until they got cold and wet and it was time to go in to have hot chocolate and warm up and put some dry warm socks on.

These times seem as if they would last forever but they flash before you in a blink of an eye, so make your lasting impressions and your traditions now with memories that you and your children will look back on and smile.

Traditions are also best served up with Grandparents since they add that little extra love in and patience to go along with that snow cream recipe.   Image

Good thing we got the last of our Kale and spinach out of the garden last week. Snow and Winter frost has seemed to gotten to the rest of the garden.

❀Perspective on Gardening for the Soul❀

Keep Calm and garden onwvintagew-1332962428-201401512759_10152103139478718_1782696737_nBeets Ready to eatFresh Garden BeetsYou really gain a Different perspective of life, when the rough patches come along. It reminds me of a song. Isn’t it ironic? For this someone had been eating healthy exercising and generally taking good care and being mindful of food had now tripped over a major health problem, as we all do in time as we age, some kind of life changing event. You learn what really matters and what doesn’t. It is difficult to ask for help, when you had for so many years been independently strong, no choice really. Sometimes we all have to ask for help, it doesn’t make us weak, it makes us stronger in faith, love, and healing and our closeness to our loved ones and you remain forever grateful.

There are the true blue that always stand up and lend a helping hand and some that really will surprise you with their offer and diligence of being there for you since they knew what it was like. These are the ones you know you can count on friends, loved ones, and family. They know you would do the same for them. Prayers and kindness always are a welcome mat when someone is going through a trial or tribulation.

From my garden it was good pickings, for the beets were in and I enjoyed cooking them for my lunch. My husband is not a beet fan but my daughter loves them as I do. Grow your garden well, plant a seed of love let it flourish out to those you know and know you well, they will see the good in thee and pass along the love they see. Pay it forward~❀Keep the Faith and let People in. ❀ Some Gardening for the Soul~

♥Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵ Which Wolf do you feed~thoughts for Soul ♥

Sad to see someone I once thought I may have known has been feeding the Angry Wolf apparently for some time. All of us do it on occasion. It has been a feeding frenzy for a while for this particular person. Those Folks that didn’t take the time for us in our lives or acknowledge our existance, why do we let it bother us? You know the kind of folks that try to pull you into their drama, or you hear about them constantly since they always have drama, and they try to drain you most of all. We are all too old for this, cut them lose, it will certainly be an anchor you no longer have to lift.

Why do we allow this? Maybe it is because we had expectations or hope or think they may change or we are allowing our inner child to take over to allow us to be vunerable again. When we don’t expect and we let go of things that we cannot change or make happen or control we all are a lot happier. Let Go and let it Be~ Just like John Lennon said. Be here and now in the moment and filled with Gratitude and Joy. What another does or says reflects on them not on us.

I think everyone makes their own destiny and it will always fall back on them their own decisions and that is really quite sad for them since it will be their loss since they are unable to feed the Good Wolf at least towards us, they don’t allow their offspring to feed the good Wolf for us either, it is like a lie that has given root in their own mind.

We both thoroughly loved that movie Saving Mr. Banks. It really allows you the sight behind the scenes of thought of Mary Poppins and how much pain was caused to her as a child, and how such a lovely book was written out of it. With Mr. Disney’s help this turned into such a lovely and endearing story. This is in all of our stories in a way. Some will understand others, and others not so much. But it is a scar you can forgive, but some things you will never forget.

Scars only make us stronger and we all struggle to continuely feed that Good Wolf, even when that person trys to hook us into being the Bad Wolf by trying to get a reaction out of us. Food for thought. ✫ The pen is mightier than the sword. ✫

Constant as in Life is Love in the Good Wolf. Life is too short to worry or to deal with someone else’s drama. ♥Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵ Happy Gardening~for the Soul~♥Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵ Gardening and Nature are cheap therapy for the Soul~Love those that treat you right~♥Ƹ̵~̡don’t bother with the rest~forgive them for yourself~ƸӜƷ

Kale and Collards from gardenHardship0a45a2df9b09faf6d5b2aa7cafb12bb2vintage christmas card art deco

We wish your families a Healthy, prosperous 2014 New Year to be better than the last! I hope you enjoyed your Lovely Christmas! We were blessed to have the children and grandchildren and family surrounded with LOVE this season. To us that is the most important Gift to the Season. We were fortunate to be able to cook for Christmas Eve Dinner. We had enough room at the table for all of the grandchildren and all of us, and are excited for the new arrival to be here June of this year.

We also had our Annual Holiday Party with Family, Friends and Loved Ones. Cousin Dale makes the best Rum Balls & cake in town, Noreen with the lovely shrimp, & croissant cream cheese filled, Jill with delicious Meatballs, and so on and on. You get the picture, lots of lovely delicious beautiful and tasty rich foods that are with us during the holidays and that we all enjoy. With so much abundance we all have to think about giving back. My husband and I attend benefits for the homeless when we can. Here is a good site for you to make a difference in your community: http://feedingamerica.org/foodbank-results.aspx

I guess now it is time to get back to reality and back on a healthy routine. Some of us are trying to shed a few pounds we put on over the holidays or just maintain. It is so much fun to enjoy these specialities during the holidays and on occasions, so we don’t feel like we are depriving ourselves of what we love.

I hadn’t written a post for sometime as I was recouping and unfortunately caught a winter cold but was able to get my Winter Garden in before hand. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Garden doing well, since I had not the time to have nourished it as much as last year.

We enjoyed some fresh Collards mixed with Kale and some Olive Oil on the stove last night and it was delicious. Nothing taste as good as fresh. We are still waiting on the broccoli and cauliflower to yield a little more before harvesting. Think about a Garden or starting seeds this fall in preparation for your summer Garden.

I have noticed that with the garden I tend to eat healthier and crave greens when I haven’t had enough of them. It is still easier to just go out and pick our food from the garden.

Happy Gardening to you~ ƸӜƷ
